Chris Rizik: The 2012 Grammy Awards were a step backward for soul music

The collective gasp you heard halfway through the Grammy Awards broadcast on Sunday night was from the soul music community, aghast over what they had just witnessed. People were already getting a little ticky on Facebook and Twitter as performance after performance came forward on Sunday night with very little nod to soul, gospel or even jazz music. Classic rock fans were in nirvana (no pun intended) as great bands like the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, a reunited Beach Boys and even the Beatles (through two performances by Paul McCartney) dominated the stage with fine performances. And the Grammys got it 100% right as Adele’s brilliant 21 received every award possible. Adele displays what is best in popular music and in 2011 she brilliantly culled elements of rock, country, folk and even some R&B into a cohesive whole that we'll be talking about for years. But on a night when soul music legend Diana Ross was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, the current, vibrant form of her genre was completely ignored, with soul only receiving peripheral, historical half-nods in mini-tributes to Whitney Houston and Etta James.

SYL JOHNSON backed by BREAKESTRA Saturday Feb 11th

After some years of failed attempts, my dream of bringing Syl Johnson out to perform with Breakestra backing is finally a reality.

I like many thousands of hip hop djs & fans first heard Syl Johnson's 1967 breakbeat classic “Different Strokes” as a teenager on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats bootleg compilation which was the source that most hip hop beat makers sampled the song from. The first of many samples of that song with it's signature grunt & young Minnie Ripperton giggling in background over open drums seems to have been Boogie down production's "Criminal Minded" & Public Enemy's "Miuzi Weighs a ton" in 1987 & then of course most famously there's Wu Tang Clan's “Shame on a Nigga” which samples the blazing horns of the bridge part. Recently Kanye & Jay-Z sampled the song without clearance (oops) for their track "the joy" again bringing light to this classic song that does not seem to want to leave the turntable or sampler. here’s the classic track that turned many of us on this master of soul!

In the broader picture outside of hip hip, many more thousands of folks around the world know Syl for his deep catalog of varied R’n B music going back to the late 50’s & on. His funky soul records in particular were definitely been a big part of my getting into collecting & spinning records. with great honor & pleasure Breakestra will bring some of Syl’s sounds alive on stage for the first time in L.A. in over 30 years.

The show is also a celebration of the amazing 2 time grammy nominated Numero Group release - Syl Johnson Complete Mythology box set. GO GET IT! This is a night not to be missed!

With many individuals still out of work and families in need non-profit community based organizations are feeling the pinch this year with record low donations. This probably means many of us are living month to month with very little extra to spend. Sometimes being smarter about how you spend will give you a little breathing room and helps restructure what matters in your life.

While many of us can make minor adjustments to give us a little more financial freedom some of us need a major boost to just keep a float. Cherry Poppin with co-hosts will celebrate this years success with a little give back event in support of a family in need that came to our attention a week ago. STONES THROW: 15 Years and Still Going Strong

The Music industry has had a rough going the past few years. Many record stores have closed and labels have shut their doors, leaving artists to fend for themselves to continue to pursue their craft. Artists are now forced to adapt to the new business models (still yet to be determined) and in order to be heard they need to spend half their time marketing their music as they do creating it. Even then it may not be enough to deem it more than a hobby, while they work their 9-5 to keep their overhead straight.

The ideal situation for an artist is to find a label structure and support that believes in and compliments what they do. This is hard to come by these days and to find a home with stability, consistency, and a strong enough brand to give them instant credibility is rare. Fortunately for some artists this label has existed for 15 years.

Founded by Peanut Butter Wolf, the aura and energy of Stones Throw has been fueled by the discovery of forward creating artists and giving them an outlet to be noticed. From the beginning foundations of the mad world of Madlib & the irreplaceable Dilla, to breakthrough successes Mayer Hawthorne and Aloe Blacc, to the branching out sounds of the Step Kids and the Now Again reissues, Stones Throw continues to prove their point that longevity is about keeping a pointed focus on what you believe in, sticking to it, and figuring out ways to keep it going.

Stones Throw is not a miracle worker, not every release is going to blow through the masses, but it's the worker mentality, steady in it's movement and adaptation, that has fed the miracle that it's still here despite the turbulence of the music industry. They are the voice of a generational sound and an imprint in many people's lives. They persist and produce year after year regardless how the dice has rolled. They just keep on keepin on.

THE GIVENDS Benefit Compilation Vol.1

For many of you this is the time of year that you start thinking about how you can donate your time and give something back. Unfortunately everyone has the same idea and usually all the soup kitchen volunteer demands are full and toys will start stacking up. If you ever work with a volunteer organization they all wish that this sentiment was year round and not just during the holiday season.

If this year you are once again inspired to give back and the Thanks Givends event itself is out of your reach, we may have an option for you. This year the first volume of THE GIVENDS benefit compilation has been put together by artists donating music to raise donations for organizations that incorporate music and art that help underprivileged and at risk youth.

This is a "You name the Price" campaign and it's something we can all easily participate in by not only donating for an incredible selection of downloads from a variety of independent artists, but sharing the link virally to be able to raise donations and awareness globally. So it's simple, if we all "Share it forward" to 10 people and so on and so on, then not only do the non-profits benefit but artists in need of larger exposure also get discovered. Win-Win and lets add a third Win, because individuals will be getting great music for what they can afford to give.

13th Annual Thanks Givends Benefit Wed November 23

Every year the community gets together to throw a benefit event to raise awareness and donations for much needed music and arts programs. Without our music this flyer would literally have no names on it.

For one night everyone is equal and everyone has the same purpose. It gives Djs an opportunity to check out other DJs, promoters to share stories and patrons to check out all the different tastes Southern Cali has to offer. Its our annual reunion.

If you have never witnessed this event, the energy is profound and the spirit is elevated to level rarely felt in an event night. All barriers are broken and with 45 djs spinning you will be fulfilled like a 3rd helping of your favorite turkey dinner.

This event works because everyone participates. As DJ Dusk would always say "One of us, is not as strong as all of us" and this is truly exemplified on this special night.

These Crates Will Soon Be Filled...PB Wolfs 11.11.11

Ah yes...the soon to be back drop of the awaited Peanut Butter Wolf's 11.11.11 event, a yearly series which started with (6.6.6) spinning a heavy metal set, but of course, then the (7.7.7) 7-day event & a gospel-themed podcast (probably had bad luck for the year so it needing some fixing), (8.8.8) an 8-day event, all videos, (9.9.9) 9-day event in 9 so. cali area codes, (10.10.10) 10 DJ's, 10hours, all 45s.

So the question is how do you top all that and keep the series going with curious interest and almost fanatical support? You say, why don't we have 11 of PB Wolf's favorite DJs, all spinning 1100 random selections from his private collection and keep promotion to a minimal so the event stays intimate at a 350 person capacity venue (Yeah right... can you say re-tweet/re-posts?)

Well of course the feeding frenzy has started, the public wants to know who the DJs are, what time they are spinning and who is going to perform the first "ooh&ahh" set or the first train wreck, or recover from a train wreck to an "ooh&ahh". All we can say is all these crates will have each Djs names tabbed on it with selections specially chosen by a digging session at PB Wolfs home, propped up on the back of the stage like Marshall stacks at a Judas Priest concert.

Half the gas has come with the unexpected serendipitious rediscovery of what Wolf had collected over the years and the DJs sharing in. Some records are new, some forgotten (even by Wolf), some will be challenging to mix, some will clear the dance floor, some will fill the dance floor, some will get you singing along, some will get you sayin "WTF!". In one of the sessions, one of the Djs (we can't name here but will probably be the first to drop flammable liquid on the vinyl and resurrect the ghosts of Jimi Hendrix), said he didn't know enough about the post-punk era vinyl but had 15% of his crate dedicated to it. Ok? Enough said.

As professionals we sometimes forget what it was like to be an amateur, and before that a novice and before that a kid that just loved to discover and buy music, sharing with your homies til 5am in the morning. Well this week (with pizza on the way) Wolfs home was full of this sentiment and fortunately for all of you (some cat named Coleman) captured it all on video, to be stored and never to be seen from again...yeah right....just like we thought all these records were going to be. The U-Haul has been picked up, gassed, and ready for delivery.

OCCUPY THUNDER SOUL

With all the focus being around the big studios promoting the big feel good yawner remake of Footloose, an award winning film was released with very little promotional support and knowledge by movie goers. Unfortunately due to tickets being undersold, theatres are being forced to discontinue showings after this week.

Many of our DJs have rocked the KASHMERE STAGE BAND over the years, which was reissued through Now Again records via Stones Throw. This film tells the story of how an all black high school band in the 70's surprised everyone by sweeping competitions against staple white schools with better funding. Thirty years later the band reunites to perform a concert to honor their teacher and life mentor.

Walk Talkin couldn't just allow for this movie to disappear into the archives so we gathered some friends and created a movie night out this Sunday October 23rd

DESCARGA presents RUMBANKETE CD Release Party Saturday Sept24th

When you hear someone talk about Cuban salsa, they’re most probably talking about the uniquely Cuban musical form called ‘timba.’ Timba is a musically complicated genre. It is characterized by frequent breaks, changes from major to minor keys, often very complex rhythms, an expanded instrumental set and aggressive percussion. Timba is rich in both rhythm, form and lyrics. Pioneers of TIMBA include, LOS VAN VAN, NG La Banda, BAMBOLEO with IRAKERE being the precursor band to modern Timba.
This Saturday September 24th, Descarga presents the CD Release Party for RUMBANKETE 'Que No Pare La Fiesta', the quintessential Timba group, based in Los Angeles. It's going to be high energy from the first note and the perfect night to get familiar with this lively salsa-sub-genre. Guest DJs ERVIN ARANA (Root Down) & BILLY GOODS will be mixing up global flavored rhythms to keep the dance floor movin between sets.

Kiss-N-Grind brought one of the most profound hip hop producers to LA this month, the esteemed, Just Blaze. He's worked on Jay-Z's albums such as Blueprint, Blueprint 2 and the Black Album, so literally the man behind the man. The Vanguard was packed as usual and had everyones hand up, feet shufflin and heads bobbin. Kid Capri made a special appearance and hosted for Just Blaze as he dropped track after track, makin the crowd go crazy.

Stones Throw Direct to Disc #3 with Dam Funk & Steve Arrington

Watching Dam Funk and Steve Arrington rehearse the night before was so amazing. I don't think people realize how much time effort and pure talent go into producing a show where you are recording LIVE directly to, not tape, but to Vinyl. I felt so inspired to be surrounded by these to heavy weights, who did not stop rehearsing until the wee hours of the morning. This show was intricately put together by Stones Throw, Capsule Labs, & Walk Talkin. The show was flawless and full of energy, stay tuned for the next Direct to Disc party.

1. Kanye West - Touch The Sky (The way he beefed up those Curtis horns...bananas.)

2. Cam'ron - Oh Boy (Prime example of the "less is more" side of JB. A simple vocal loop defines the entire song.)

3. Jay-Z - Girls, Girls, Girls (I'm a big fan of the original Tom Brock joint...but the way he made the "ooooh baby" sample function as an essential component of the beat rather than "extra"...the whole vibe of this song was a homerun for me when it came out.)

3. Jay-Z - Kingdom Come (What else can you say, this is a shining example of the quintessential "big sound" Just Blaze production style that put him on the map. Why is he not scoring films, seriously??)

3. Jay-Z - Show Me What You Got (Great example of taking a very obvious sample and STILL makin' it explode. It's not always about digging up the super obscure joints!)

I'm sorry, there's no way I could limit myself to only one track from Jay.'

4. Erick Sermon ft. Redman - React (You've gotta respect anyone who sits and listens to a Bollywood record long enough to even find something to chop up. My favorite part is when Red starts ad-libbing at the end. Hilarious.)

5. Jay Electronica - Exhibit C (Not even gonna touch this one...it's on everyone's Top XX list for 2009. Just a classic example of skilled delivery over quality production.)

6. Freeway - What We Do (Yo. If this doesn't make you wanna jump out your seat and break everything in sight, call a paramedic.)

So he listed 6, can you blame him?

Aside from these, Just Blaze produced hits for a few more folks you may have heard of...Janet Jackson, Fabolous (breeeeeeathe!), Busta Rhymes, Notorious B.I.G., Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Common, Diddy, Talib Kweli, Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Fat Joe, The Game, Ghostface Killah, T.I., Rakim...you get the idea. Here's the icing though...this dude is actually incredible on the tables. This won't be one of those shows where the producer just shows up and plays songs off of an iPod...Blaze cuts up a record like nobody's business. Don't believe us? Every Wednesday Cherry Poppin' goes down at The Room in Hollywood by Honey Collective's Monica Payne and Walk Talkin's Loslito. This weeks special guest was KCRW's Anthony Valadez along side Cherry Poppin's resident Tailwind Turner and hosted by the energetic and always fun KG Superstar, the crew got the crowd shuffling their feet all night long, while busting out his photography skills in the DJ booth like a ninja. Special guests that dropped by was Jordin Sparks, who sang Happy Birthday to blogger/socialite Jason Lee, singer Miguel and Omarion. This place gets so crackin' that you really do forget that your partying on hump day, not a Friday night. I've always enjoyed my time here, everyone is dancing and having a good time I suggest you change things up and check it out for yourself.

ATABEY and BOMBA Music

One of the oldest traditions, Bomba is a style of music and dance brought to Puerto Rico from Africa by the slaves who worked in sugar cane plantations. The music represents a mixture of religious, cultural, and poverty dynamics within struggles of life and love. Bomba often begins with a liana, or a female singer who is answered by the chorus and musicians with a 2/4 or 6/8 rhythm before the dancing begins. Harmony is not used. Dancers interact with the drummer, who is usually solo and dance in pairs without touching each other.

A LIL' BIT ABOUT KID CAPRI

Its the eve before KID CAPRI's debut performance at KISS-N-GRIND on Saturday April 9th at VANGUARD (Hollywood) and we took the liberty to give you some historical info on his accomplishments and why he is now considered a legend.

KID CAPRI (born February 7, 1967), was born in the Bronx, New York City, New York.
In the 1970s, Kid Capri began to attend block parties, starting his DJ career at the age of 8. He eventually garnered widespread attention at Studio 54 and began selling his sets with his partner at the time Starchild. Kid Capri has deejayed for seven seasons of Def Comedy Jam. He's also produced tracks for Boogie Down Productions, Heavy D, Big L, Grand Puba, and Quincy Jones. He eventually released an LP on Warner Brothers Records titled The Tape in 1991. He appeared in the 1993 movie Who's the Man? alongside Doctor Dre, Colin Quinn, KRS-One, Ice-T, Pete Rock, CL Smooth, Eric B, Flavor Flav, Kris Kross, Melle Mel, Busta Rhymes and many others. In 1997, Kid Capri switched from Warner Brothers to Trackmasters after he appeared on the 1997 Puff Daddy And The Family World Tour. He has subsequently released Soundtrack to the Streets in 1998.

Peace4Kids.org/The Watts Boys and Girls Club

"HOW TO WRECK A NICE BEACH"

The vocoder was invented to improve telecommunications in the 1930s and re-purposed by the military to mask speech among officials during World War II. By the 1980s, artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Zapp began using it as a musical instrument. The sound caught on and has remained one of the most influential movements in music to this day, although Auto-Tune (not included on the list), has mostly replaced it. Writer Dave Tompkins is somewhat of a vocoder historian; the legendary music journalist wrote a book this year, How To Wreck A Nice Beach, chronicling the machine's history.

Farad: The Electric Voice

Description: The vocoder-based recordings (1970-1983) of electronic music pioneer Bruce Haack.Farad: The Electric Voice includes out of print and un-released tracks and specifically focuses on tracks using Haack's self-made vocoder, which he named “Farad.” This was the one of the first truly musical vocoders, and first to be used on a pop album, pre-dating Kraftwerk’s Autobahn by several years.
